Things Change

Dear Hopesters,

John C. Maxwell has written, “Change is inevitable. Growth is optional.” Right and true.

THINGS CHANGE. A constant of life is change. It’s just part of the definition of our earthly existence and being alive and no amount of money, exercise, cosmetic surgery, wishful thinking. Drugs, or scientific breakthroughs can alter this reality.

THINGS CHANGE. At Hope we started out in a shared, rented space in a shopping center. Office computers were relatively new. Email was new. Cell phones were only for the rich and famous. Besides telephones, our weekly letter was the only way to effectively communicate with Hopesters. By the way, we were not even yet known as Hopesters. I believe it was Blake Baysinger who coined this phrase years after our start.

THINGS CHANGE. Communication is instantaneous. Worldwide events can be known immediately. More knowledge is available to more people than ever dreamed possible. We now deal with such things as Artificial Intelligence, climate change, and gender confusion.

THINGS CHANGE. When I was a kid while watching TV, in black and white, in sitcoms couples slept in different beds, there was no swearing, and everything was rated G. Today meaningful dialogue has been replaced by the “F” bomb, nudity is common place, and gruesome plots and scenes keep trying outdo each other in evil and grossness.

THINGS CHANGE. Sometimes, do you possibly feel a bit overwhelmed by it all? Sometimes, do you fear for our society and even global stability? Sometimes, do you wonder what’s up around the next moral or technological bend? If so, read on.

Heraclitus wrote, “There is nothing permanent except change.” Wrong and false.

GOD DOESN’T CHANGE. He is our rock and fortress. He is the foundation and core of all things on which we can plant our feet, hearts, and minds. He is what we can hold onto during the ever-changing flux and confusion of daily life. He is our source of stability and hope. He will never abandon us, change the rules, or tell us lies. Stand firm in Jesus.

Please, do not just gloss over the following verses. Allow them to sink deeply into your heart and mind giving you peace:

I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.”  Rev. 22:13

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” Heb. 13:8,

God is not a man, so he does not lie. He is not human, so he does not change his mind. Has he ever spoken and failed to act? Has he ever promised and not carried it through?” Num. 23:19

Peace,
steve
