Pop quiz: Who’s the first person in the Bible described as being filled with the Holy Spirit?
Most people guess someone like Moses, or maybe a prophet like Elijah. But the answer?
Bezalel.
Yep—Bezalel. Not a preacher. Not a warrior. Not a king. Bezalel was an artist. A craftsman. A guy who worked with his hands. Here's what Exodus 31:1–3 says: “Then the Lord said to Moses, ‘See, I have chosen Bezalel… and I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with wisdom, with understanding, with knowledge and with all kinds of skills.’”
Now, to be fair, earlier figures like Joseph and others are described as having the Spirit of God upon them—but Bezalel is the first person the Bible explicitly says was filled with the Spirit. And what was he filled for? To build. To design. To make beautiful, holy things.
I love this, because it reminds me that the Holy Spirit isn't just for “spiritual” stuff. He fills you for your real life—your real work. Whether you're a teacher, welder, nurse, mom, student, or retired—whatever your day-to-day looks like, the Spirit of God wants to empower you for it. For beauty. For excellence. For purpose.
Maybe you've never thought of your creativity, your problem-solving, your leadership, or your patience with toddlers as Spirit-filled work—but according to Scripture, it absolutely can be.
God doesn't just fill pastors. He fills people. People like Bezalel. People like you.
So this week, let’s ask the Spirit to fill us—not just on Sunday, but on the job, in the kitchen, in the classroom, or at the coffee shop. Because wherever you go, He goes. And whatever you do, He can breathe His life into it.
You are filled… for a purpose.
